Trans Liberation Means Socialist Revolution

On Trans Day Of Remembrance we reflect on all those lost over the course of the past year and the magnitude of the struggle ahead. We commit ourselves to fight to finish for trans liberation and the liberation of all people oppressed and exploited by the capitalist system, and reaffirm our confidence in the revolutionary working class to bring about a society where the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all.

Official records always dramatically underestimate hate crimes. It is a commonplace that statistics often fail to reflect the underlying motivations of violence, marginalized and oppressed people are naturally reluctant to share personal information, and it is the interest of the ruling class to minimize the extent of the violence it perpetuates. That is why the fact that 2021 has been the deadliest year for trans working class people on record is so crushing. Trans workers are being brutalized in the streets, denied housing, employment, and medical care, and harassed in every space we try to occupy.

Right-wing politicians are branding trans people as sexaul predators, passing discriminatory bathroom bills aimed at driving trans people out of public spaces, and even banning trans kids from playing sports. This oppression and marginalization carried out directly by the state is reinforced by the ‘unsanctioned’ violence of transphobes in the street. As the Rittenhouse verdict demonstrates, right-wing killers are able to prey on marginalized people without fear of any consequences. Trans workers are sexually assaulted, murdered, or driven to suicide and the perpators are embraced by the capitalist state. This expansion and implicit sanctioning of transphobic violence is not confined solely to the open right wing or the Republican Party. TERFism is increasingly becoming the dominant ideology of liberalism and the Democrats. From the transphobic reporting of the BBC to Kamala Harris denying incarcerated trans people gender-affirming care, the whole ruling class of present society stands united against trans liberation.

This means that “queer liberation can only be achieved through working class revolution and that any socialism that fails to fight for queer liberation is unworthy of the name. Our power comes from our position as workers and tenants, it stems from the very same systems that the capitalist class uses to extract surplus value from us and it must be used to destroy those systems. Under capitalism, queer workers experience a kind of super-exploitation due to the homophobia and transphobia that is inseparability tied to existing property relations.” (Fighting For Queer Liberation) Transphobic capitalism cannot be reformed, it must be demolished.
